my writing philosophy
Writing is hot chocolate and space boots.
Hot chocolate because of its source of comfort; a chief manifestation of creativity, agency in the world. It’s a prime way I connect with others and with myself.
Space boots because writing is exploration. It’s a road to learning the old and a means to creating the new.
I’m passionate about writing. I’m also passionate about the people who engage in it. I find writers to be a generally emotionally-intelligent lot, interested in ideas and both the playful and grave aspects of life.
about me
I’ve been working professionally as a writer, editor, and learning experience developer for more than two decades. In addition to newspapers and magazines, I have written more than 20 books, including children’s nonfiction, textbooks, workbooks and guides, and popular science.
Edison’s Concrete Piano (ECW Press, 2009) was featured on the CBC and the Discovery Channel, translated into two languages and optioned for film.
Two books will be published in 2026. The Prosperous PhD (University of Toronto Press) is a unique, co-authored self-help book for graduate students. Anxious and Hairy, represented by Caroline Hardman, and published by House of Anansi Press in North America and Icon Books in United Kingdom has taken thirteen years to bring to fruition!
I’m actively involved in writing courses and mentorship programs. I’m so passionate about creativity that I did a PhD in how to support it. I’ve been involved in starting seven writing groups, three of which are ongoing.
